ISCN’s Landmark Global Initiative for Island Climate Resilience: Blue Adaptation Forum to be Held in Korea
Gwangju, Korea – The Indonesia Sustainable Development Goals Center Network (ISCN) has announced its first international collaboration by co-hosting the 2024 International Forum on Climate Crisis Response and Sustainable Development for Island Communities with Chosun University and Shinan County. This significant event, themed 'Blue Adaptation,' will be held on October 31 at Chosun University in Gwangju, South Korea, and will focus on climate adaptation strategies uniquely designed for island ecosystems.
Chosun University, Korea’s first private university founded through community support, plays a prominent role in this partnership. Recognized for its commitment to social and academic advancement, Chosun University became the first Korean institution to sign an MOU with ISCN this past August, solidifying a collaborative path toward sustainable island development. As a central hub, Gwangju links Seoul, Korea’s capital region, with Jeolla Province, home to South Korea’s highest concentration of islands, positioning Chosun University as a key player in fostering global cooperation and addressing urgent climate challenges through innovative academic and policy-driven strategies.
This forum stands as a vital platform for international collaboration, bringing together leaders in academia, government, and sustainable development to share insights and strategies for resilient island communities.
A Global Platform for ISCN's Vision in Island Resilience
Established in 2015, ISCN was designed to bring together 58 SDG Centers across Indonesia under the support of the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas). This forum marks ISCN’s first global outreach, an important milestone in its mission to realize the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through culturally tailored, community-centric models. ISCN President Bayu Arie Fianto, a key speaker, will deliver insights on how the organization has supported Indonesia's archipelagic regions through the 'Blue Adaptation' strategy, enhancing both environmental and economic resilience. By focusing on sustainable models applicable to island ecosystems, ISCN exemplifies how strategic, community-driven solutions can bridge local needs with global climate goals.
Exploring Climate Resilience through Strategic Research and Case Studies
The forum’s agenda comprises two main sessions: Strategic Research and Case Studies. The Strategic Research session will open with a keynote by Chosun University President Chun-Sung Kim, setting the context with an address on the role of sustainability in addressing crises. Fianto’s talk on 'Sustainable Development in Archipelagic Nations: Insights from Indonesia' will present success stories from Indonesia, followed by Dewi Prihatini of Jember University, who will explain how Indonesian communities have pioneered sustainable practices that align with ISCN’s vision for 'Golden Indonesia 2045.' Later, Nurjannah Nurdin will explore advanced monitoring using satellite data, emphasizing Blue Carbon ecosystems’ critical role in mitigating climate impacts on small islands.
The Case Studies session will highlight practical applications of the Blue Adaptation strategy. Joselito Costas from Cebu, Philippines, will discuss sustainable tourism initiatives that balance ecological preservation with local economic benefits. ISCN’s senior advisor, Unang Mulkhan, will present Blue Adaptation projects, such as mangrove restoration in North Kalimantan and marine protection in Raja Ampat. The session will conclude with insights from Daisy Jae-A Park, who has overseen the forum’s organization and serves as Adjunct Professor of International Relations at Chosun University. Formerly the Country Manager for South Korea at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MoTCE) in Indonesia, Park will outline adaptive strategies that island communities are adopting to maintain both ecological integrity and economic resilience amidst climate challenges.
Forging Partnerships for Sustainable Waste Management
To address plastic waste challenges in coastal and island regions, ISCN, Chosun University, Shinan County, and Grico Co., Ltd. will sign a Multilateral Agreement on Climate Crisis Response for Island Regions. This partnership, aiming to develop and distribute biodegradable plastic technology in Indonesia, also seeks to establish local production facilities to enhance resource circulation and reduce plastic waste. Grico’s environmentally certified plastic innovations underscore this effort, with plans to leverage ICT-based cooperation for an impactful technology transfer to support ISCN’s sustainability mission.
A Model for Global Climate Adaptation Cooperation
The forum will gather over 200 experts, including representatives from the Indonesian Embassy, climate and tourism professionals, and government officials, creating a collaborative environment for developing practical, sustainable solutions. ISCN’s debut on the global stage, in partnership with Chosun University and Shinan County, sets a precedent for international cooperation, highlighting how culturally integrated strategies can address complex climate issues unique to island ecosystems.
